In fifty years Darwin Theatre Company has grown from an amateur repertory group to a locally and nationally funded organisation with a reputation for commitment to local theatre development and producing high quality theatre productions. DTC is the only professional theatre production company in the Top End of the Northern Territory.
DTC has a strong commitment to nurturing theatre that expresses unique local stories, the cultures of, and issues affecting Northern Australia. Through a program of new work and contemporary adaptations DTC has sought to reflect and enhance the cultural and creative aspirations of Northern Territory communities.
This next triennium (Jan 2006 to December 2008) will see DTC sharpen its focus as a regional theatre company that produces professional theatre programs that are regionally distinctive and embody the Company’s values of creativity, relevance, excellence and excitement. DTC intends to attract new audiences, surprise established audiences, and offer attractive investment opportunities for government agencies, corporate sponsors and philanthropic organisations.
Excellence and relevance in theatre production will be achieved through an artistic focus on ‘telling Territory stories’, a collaborative approach to the development of local works, and the development and employment of professional theatre practitioners who demonstrate a commitment to working in the NT.
Through collaboration with arts and service organisations, DTC will offer opportunities for emerging artists and community members to be involved in professional theatrical activity. A program of training and skills development and an innovative volunteer and membership support will continue over the next triennium as an important means of building regional theatre infrastructure and creating pathways for aspiring theatre arts practitioners in the Northern Territory.
The Company will work with other organisations to assist the development of the arts sector, taking a leadership role in the promotion of culture and cultural values in the Northern Territory. This will be achieved through collaboration, advocacy, brokerage and community capacity building.
The triennium 2006-2008 will see the consolidation of DTC’s progression from a predominantly Darwin-based company to a regional theatre company working in communities across the Northern Territory. While DTC is highly appreciated by its Darwin-based audience, it is apparent that audience and theatre development continues to want for attention across other Northern Territory communities. The Territory population is rich in cultural diversity and heritage. In this next triennium DTC will explore ways of developing and producing works with Indigenous writers and performers and those from other cultures, and from regional and remote areas.
