The Boathouse

A Darwin Theatre Company and JUTE co-production

A comedy about an ordinary man who finds the courage to stand up for what he believes in. Old buildings cradle memories and are reference points for people’s history but history is only part of the journey for Ray to take.

The beginning of the 21st century in regional Australia is a time of change as development surges through the coastal cites comprising small town character with homogenised shopping centres, impersonal franchises and artificial swimming lagoons.

Othello

No-one falls like a great man in love.

31 May - 11 June 2006

Shakespeare's elegant tale of betrayal and broken faith in a dynamic new production. With Tom E. Lewis as Othello heading a large and exciting cast of NT's leading talent, this stirring story of romance and tragedy, with its racial undertow, takes on new significance beneath the starry Darwin sky.

The young Desdemona falls deeply in love with a famous general, the Moor Othello, and travels with him to continue their idyll on the island of Cyprus. Jealous eyes and sick minds follow them and, before long, the ugliest of whispers echo in Othello's ears like approaching thunder. When the storm breaks over their island of dreams, nothing will stand in its path.

This production, designed by Dominie Hooper and directed by John du Feu, places Othello - regarded by some as Shakespeare's finest and most insightful drama - in an exciting contemporary context and a beautiful setting.

Minyerri

Performance and skills-development project with the community and elders of Minyerri. In cooperation with Katherine Regional Arts, and supported by the Theatre Board of the Australia Council, DTC is helping develop contemporary performing arts and skills in the remote NT community of Minyerri. 2006 will bring the completion of the first stage with three residencies and, in September, a presentation by and for the whole community.

John du Feu, together with Tom E. Lewis and elders of Minyerri, will direct residencies and production, drawing from local stories. The performance, which will take place in September, will include music, song, movement, mask and storytelling. Artists have also included: Nicky Fearn, Gail Evans, Daphne Cazalet, Dale Mickelo and Shellie Morris. Tracks Dance Company is generously providing advice to DTC based on their long experience of work in NT regional communities. Also, by arrangement with Darwin Festival, DTC will invite a small group from Minyerri to visit us in Darwin to experience first-hand selected performances in the festival.

Melek mo Hani

Melek mo Hani “Milk and Honey” tells the story of a Pacific South Sea Islander who struggles to convince people of his cultural identity, until a series of extraordinary events propel him into the world spotlight and recognition.

Moses Lingetoa is a free spirited musician who travels from place to place singing the songs of his homeland. This all changes the day he is caught without a busking licence, with an expired visa and a suspicious immigration officer. Moses now begins the fight of his life to establish his identity as he draws upon his family’s past and the journey of his great grandfather, Lingetoa, from blackbirding on Malaita Island in 1878 to the Mackay sugar plantations, through to the deportation of his family in 1907.

Melek Mo Hani is a play about finding identity in the 21st century when you have a foot in 3 countries and a family history involving kidnapping, exploitation and deportation.
